One of the most popular dishes in Hawaii utilizes fresh tuna from the surrounding waters of the Pacific Ocean. The dish is Poke, prepared with raw Ahi, and is a common menu item at restaurants all around the Hawaiian Islands. One of the most popular ways to enjoy a delicious bowl of Poke is to grab a to-go container from your favorite Poke place, and head to the beach, washing it down with an ice cold Hawaiian beer.

When you’re at home, wherever that may be, you can still enjoy a delicious bowl of Poke, using common ingredients from your local grocery store. Ahi is a very popular fish that is carried at grocers all over the country, and you may even be able to find Kona Longboards at specialty liquor stores that have an extensive beer collection.

So how do you make the best Ahi Poke? This simple recipe will make you feel like you’ve just finished a day at the beach, or come right off of a local fishing boat. All you’ll be missing is the picturesque beach!

How to Make the Best Ahi Poke
Ingredients
1 pound ahi (yellowfin tuna) steaks
Scant 1/4 cup sweet onion, thinly sliced
1 scallion, sliced on bias (about 1/4 cup)
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons black sesame seeds, toasted
2 teaspoons macadamia nuts (roasted and unsalted), chopped and toasted
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons sesame oil
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon 'alaea or Hawaiian sea salt, or coarse Kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions

  • Slice the tuna: Using a sharp knife, cut the tuna into 1-inch cubes. Place in a large bowl.
  • Combine all ingredients: Add the onions, garlic, sesame seeds, macadamia nuts, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and red pepper flakes. Gently mix until thoroughly combined.
  • Cover and refrigerate: Cover the poke with plastic wrap and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours or up to 2 days.
