Catch of the Day – Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi)

When you think of the fish that are commonly caught off the coast of the Hawaiian Islands, tuna is probably near the top of the list. With so many different species of tuna swimming freely, it is often hard to discern which is which, especially when you’re dining on a fresh filet or enjoying a sushi roll made with that days catch.

The Hawaiian name for Yellowfin Tuna is Ahi, and the meat of the fish is used in a variety of Hawaiian dishes, including specialty sushi rolls, seared as a main course, or in everyone’s favorite, Poke! The meat is commonly served raw, or seared, and the delicate taste, coupled with firm texture and perfect seasoning make the Yellowfin a perfect fish to eat.

The size of the tuna ranges quite broadly, with the smallest fish being caught weighing as little as 3 lbs, and the largest coming in at over 200. The larger fish are commonly caught way out at sea, and encountering the stunning Yellowfin is quite common on fishing charters. Reeling one in is no easy task, as the strength and stamina present quite the challenge. Once you reel one in, you will be amazed at how strikingly pretty the fish is, and the pictures from your Hawaii Fishing Charter will give you bragging rights once you return home.

As common as Yellowfin is in the cuisine throughout Hawaii, fishing is sustainable and there is no threat to the species. The abundance of the fish, safe fishing practices, and reproduction all enable the population to remain healthy and the fishing to be practiced responsibly. Hawaiians hold Yellowfin in high regard, and because the fish enjoys a longer peak season of fishing, it can be enjoyed year round.

Your Hawaii Fishing Charter is sure to be quite the adventure, taking you out on the open ocean for a day of fishing and cruising the high seas. While out at sea, you may encounter a few different types of fish, and the possibility for reeling one is will create a lot of excitement and anticipation. The Captain and Crew know just where to go to find the catch of the day, and once the battle starts, you are in for a challenge that is difficult to prepare for.

There is nothing better than sampling the fish that is fresh from the ocean, and that you helped to reel in. If you are lucky enough to hook a Yellowfin, you are in for a treat, and will never taste Ahi that is fresher. And don't forget to grab some Poke during your trip!
